MUSCLE ENERGY TECHNIQUE

Torso spine

Muscle Energy Technique is a direct, non-invasive manual therapy often used to try to relieve pain, normalize joint dysfunction and increase range of motion. The practitioner evaluates the primary areas of dysfunction in order to place the affected joints in precise positions that enable the client to perform gentle isometric contractions.

Muscle energy techniques can be applied safely to almost any joint in the body. Many athletes use MET as a preventative measure to guard against future muscle and joint injury. However, it is also used by individuals who have a limited range of motion due to back pain, neck and shoulder pain, scoliosis (curvature of the spine), sciatica, asymmetrical legs, hips or arms, chronic muscle pain, stiffness or injury.

Muscle Energy Technique (or MET) is based on the principle of reciprocal inhibition, that explains that muscles on one side of a joint will always relax to accommodate the contraction of muscles on the other side of that joint when indirect pressure is applied.
